GM Advances Lithium Manganese-Rich Battery Technology for Next-Generation EVs

General Motors (GM) announced its fourth-generation EV platform which supports lithium manganese-rich (LMR) prismatic battery technology at the GM Forward event. It is an energy storage and chemistry solution developed by GM and its joint venture partner LG Energy Solution that redesigns electric drive units and centralizes computing to improve vehicle performance metrics and reduce production cost.

The newly announced technology delivers 33% higher energy density compared to standard lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells at a comparable production cost. It uses significantly more manganese (65%), about 35% nickel, and virtually no cobalt (or is cobalt-free) in its manufacturing process. GM’s lithium manganese-rich battery technology is built on a layered structure represented as xLi₂MnO₃ · (1-x)LiMO₂, where M includes Ni and Mn. Given below is the explanation of each component in the given formula:

  • Li₂MnO₃: Lithium manganese oxide, to increase the energy storage capacity in a battery.
  • LiMO₂: Another lithium-based oxide to determine factors such as stability, performance, and energy storing capacity.
  • x and (1-x): These represent the portion of two oxide components in the material. If one portion increases, the other decreases to balance stability and battery life.
  • Layered crystal architecture: The atoms are arranged in organised, layered structure that allows lithium ions to move during battery charging and discharging.

The goal is to improve vehicle efficiency by combining battery technology, propulsion systems, aerodynamics and vehicle electronics, instead of depending solely upon battery capacity. GM’s fourth-generation platform aims to introduce next-generation battery tech and more efficient vehicle engineering to mainstream electric mobility. The rate of adoption of this technology by manufacturers will depend on many factors such as production scale, real-world performance, and the company’s ability to meet cost-saving targets.
